Frequently Asked Questions
Part of our mission is to help educate our customers about the electrical components
in their homes and businesses. Our estimators and electricians are happy to answer
any questions large or small. We work with the
Phinney Ridge Home Association, at their annual home show and in workshops
to teach the basics to homeowners. Brian was featured on KOMO Radio’s call in home
show (listen to the show).
Some questions many people have are:
Can you as a homeowner fix this?
A handy home owner can fix most problems. You will need basic tools such as wire
strippers, pliers, diagonal cutters (dikes), screw drivers- both flat and phillips, hammer,
plug tester and an electrical circuit tester.
If the problem is with an appliance, we at Kemly Electric will be happy to troubleshoot
and direct you to the appropriate contractor.
How do I reset my circuit breaker?
Look for the breaker that is set in the middle. First, flip the breaker all the
way off. You should feel a slight resistance as the spring inside re-sets. Then
turn the breaker back on. Power should be restored. If the breaker does not reset
call us at Kemly Electric and we will troubleshoot the problem.
Can I change my own outlets and switches?
If it is a problem with your home electrical system, you, as a homeowner, sure can.
The first thing to do is shut off the circuit breaker.
No one should work on an energized circuit. Most homeowner
issues such as replacing switches or outlets are simple enough. There are good do-it
yourself books in the library or the local hardware store. The main thing to remember
is the longer slot on the outlet device has to be connected to the neutral (white)
wire. The black or hot wire connects to the smaller slot. The green or bare wire
connect to the ground slot. You will need to purchase a plug tester and test each
outlet after installation.
How do I replace my own light fixture?
A light fixture is more complicated than a plug or switch. Some older homes do not
have a junction box, new fixtures require a junction box to be installed. Each installation
needs to be evaluated individually. If the installation is not straightforward,
I recommend calling Kemly Electric for a qualified electrician to do the installation.
